Medical Centre

Tring Park School has a fully equipped Medical Centre located in the ground floor of No. 9 Mansion Drive, which is immediately outside the main school gates.

The Medical Centre is staffed seven days a week by experienced, competent and dedicated RGNs.  The facility's opening hours are from 7.30am - 8.45pm during the week and 9.00am - 4.30pm at the weekends.  The Medical Centre has two separate wards for the close observation of pupils who are acutely unwell.

The nursing team work closely with all of the pastoral staff to insure the best care and support for every pupil attending Tring Park School. Outside the Medical Centre opening hours, the pastoral staff care for pupils with minor illnesses in their dorms.

The Medical Centre is open to all pupils before and after school and during break times during the week. If pupils feel unwell during academic lesson time they must obtain permission to attend the Medical Centre from the Director or Deputy Director of Academic Studies.  During vocational lessons, pupils must obtain a purple slip from a member of staff or their houseparent before seeing one of the nursing team.

Our nurses have contributed to, and been acknowledged in, the Royal College of Nursing Toolkit for School Nurses.

The nursing team in the Medical Centre offer:

  • Asthma Clinic
  • Healthy weight checks
  • Informal teaching of pupils regarding health and hygiene
  • Minor injuries assessment and treatment
  • Minor illnesses assessment and treatment
  • Health promotion
  • Informal counselling
  • Nutritional advice
  • Sexual health advice

We have very close links with a dietician, chiropodist, orthodontist, local dentist and speech therapist.

The nursing team supports student paediatric nurse placements for the University of Hertfordshire throughout the academic year.  These students are supervised by the nursing team whilst working in the Medical Centre.

School Doctor

Our School Doctor comes from the local surgery, Rothschild House, twice a week to run a clinic on Monday and Thursday mornings. Pupils can request appointments or they are referred to the doctor by one of the nursing team. We have a female doctor which we find many of the pupils prefer, although if a pupil requests to see a male doctor an appointment can be made at the local surgery. If pupils need to see a doctor urgently outside of school surgery hours they will be seen at the local surgery as soon as possible.

All new pupils undergo a ‘new pupil check’ when they start school and this includes an examination by the school doctor.

The Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Suite is a new facility also based in the ground floor of No. 9 Mansion Drive.  We have two highly experienced physiotherapists who work from Monday to Friday and specialise in dance related injury and conditions. Pupils are advised to see the physiotherapist during an open session at lunchtime between 12.45 and 1.45. The physiotherapist will assess them and then give further appointments as needed.

Dr Julian Widdowson: Consultant Sport Exercise Medicine Physician MBBS MRCGP DCH DRCOG MScSEM FFSEM. Appointments for this clinic are made by the physiotherapists.

Simon Drane: Chartered Performance Psychologist BSc Hons, Mpsych, Cpsych, AFBPsS.  Charge: £120 per hour.

Tring Park School has a counselling service. This is led by Sophy Winfield. Sophy offers sessions to pupils either through referral from the nursing team or directly from pupils who can make an appointment via a mobile phone text. The counselling service also includes an independent listener who provides an ear for those pupils who just wish to talk confidentially to someone who is detached from the school.

Private Health insurance

Tring Park School runs an AXA/PPP scheme which your son or daughter is invited to join. The school physiotherapy appointments (apart from open session) and orthopaedic consultant are private and covered by AXA/PPP or other private insurance.  If your child is not covered by private insurance every effort will be made for the pupil to be referred and treated within the NHS where necessary.

If you need to contact the Medical Centre please email or Tel. 01442 821675.
