This comprehensive and innovative music course at Tring Park is aimed at talented musicians who have an interest in creating and performing popular music. The curriculum covers three broad interdisciplinary areas of learning: performance practice, songwriting and creative musicianship, and principles of music theory and applied aural skills. Our students must display creativity, intellect, enthusiasm and confidence in order to maximise their potential on the course. In addition to their musical vocational training, students also undertake A Levels, ensuring a well-rounded educational experience.
"I had a great day in Tring meeting the students and hearing their songs, discussing them and trying to impart some of my meagre wisdom. They were great players and singers and eager to learn, everything an amateur teacher could want."
Frank Turner - singer/songwriter
Students graduating from the Commercial Music course may find themselves ready to pursue the industry or undergo further training. Former students have gone on to gain places at some of the most prestigious music colleges and conservatoires, including The Institute of Contemporary Music Performance (UK), Leeds College of Music, Royal Northern College of Music and Berklee College of Music (USA).
"It was a pleasure to teach a masterclass at Tring Park. The students were all very keen and motivated, and applied the new techniques and methods very well. I am confident they’ll all turn out to be fantastic writers and have exceeding careers in the music industry. The class inspired me with their talent and natural ability! "
Taylor Jones - Singer-songwriter

"I very much enjoyed my jazz vocal masterclass at Tring Park. All the students were incredibly musical and eager to learn about jazz vocals styles - I was very impressed with their musicality and harmonic knowledge. They all chose good material and had thought about presentation and delivery. The school was amazing and very welcoming to both myself and pianist Gareth Williams. We look forward to teaching there again."
Claire Martin OBE - Jazz Vocalist and BBC Radio 3 Presenter for Jazz Line Up
Practical musicianship constitutes a large proportion of the course and there are opportunities throughout the School to collaborate with some of the other vocational departments. The creative aspect of the Commercial Music Course allows pupils to write original material, create their own arrangements and write for commissions. Other classes include:
- Digital recording and production
- Master classes given by industry professionals
- Theory and aural training
- The music industry
- Two lessons a week on the student's primary instrument/voice
Tring Park is renowned for its high performance standards and we would expect anyone applying for the Commercial Music Course to have reached a good standard on their principal instrument.
Every year the students on the Commercial Music Course perform a London Showcase. Previous venues have included: the 606 Club, Pizza Express Live, Holborn and Bush Hall. Throughout the year students on the course have frequent opportunities to perform in Acoustic Nights and an in-house showcase. Students on the course often get the opportunity to collaborate with students on other vocational courses.
"I had a great afternoon with the popular music singers. I was impressed by the professionalism of those participating; the willingness to try new techniques and to raise their game in terms of vocal and physical performance. The level of talent was a joy to work with."
