First Form Science - a voyage of discovery

First Form pupils were able to show off their lab safety skills as well as learn more about chemical reactions when they viewed and then did their own experiments with Dr Coren and Miss Ho in their Science lessons.

As these pictures show, they learnt how to make different coloured flames using different chemical compounds. In particular, they were amazed that the bright blue coloured copper sulphate made a ghoulish green flame! Appropriately for a lesson around the same time as both Bonfire Night and Diwali, they also learnt about the ingredients and science behind sparklers – burning the dark coloured iron power would create brightly orange sparks!

There were  a lot of interesting questions that really aided the learning and it reminded the photographer, Mrs Bell of this quote by Einstein “The important thing is to not stop questioning. Curisority has its own reason for existing".
