We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic specialist guitar teacher to join our busy and successful Music Department.

About the role

Teaching acoustic and electric guitar to students from Grade 8 and beyond. There is considerable scope to develop the role and increase hours. We welcome applicants who are interested in combining this role with the role of Commercial Music Course Tutor.

The contract is part-time with approximately 3 to 5 hours per week based on student demand. Applications will be reviewed on receipt and we may appoint before the closing date.

Main Duties

  • Teach one-to-one guitar (acoustic and electric) lessons as per the rotational timetable.
  • Teach pupils, ranging from complete beginners to those of an advanced standard, the technique and musicianship required to develop as guitarists, offering encouragement, support, and guidance as necessary.
  • Plan lessons with effective resources, scaffolding and challenge to ensure that pupils make progress in their understanding of the guitar playing from a practical and theoretical perspective.
  • To prepare pupils for entry in graded examinations (RGT, RockSchool, Trinity, ABRSM etc).
  • Prepare appropriate pupils for the practical component of GCSE and A level examinations in consultation with the Director of Music
  • Write detailed individual pupil reports according to the School’s reporting cycle, and maintain an up-to-date register.
  • Attend staff meetings, in-service training and conferences to keep up to date with teaching, learning and safeguarding procedures.
  • To undertake any reasonable additional duties at the request of the Principal.

Person Specification

Essential

  • Excellent practical musicianship and guitar skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of music theory and notations.
  • Experience of one-to-one teaching from beginners to Grade 8 and beyond.
  • Confident IT skills including file management, MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Ability to work as an efficient, reliable and flexible team member.
  • Promote and safeguarding the welfare of children and young persons for whom you are responsible and with whom you come into contact.

Desirable

  • Experience of running ensembles with pupils (rock / pop / soul / jazz bands).
  • Experience of teaching music theory.
  • Active musician, able to accompany students and enhance their ensemble performances.
