Hard Times is set in the north of England in Charles Dickens’ Coketown, with its blackened factories, downtrodden workers and polluted environment. This northern Victorian town is the soulless domain of the strict teacher Thomas Gradgrind and the heartless factory owner Josiah Bounderby.
Gradgrind raises his oldest children, Tom and Louisa to be concerned only with logic and facts and figures. But will this really prepare them for a life of emotional turmoil?
What will happen when they encounter ‘Mr Sleary's Horse-Riding' circus, a gin-soaked and hilarious troupe of open-hearted and affectionate people who act as an antidote to all the drudgery and endless misery and hardship endured by the workers of Coketown?
This innovative production adopts a story-telling style with an ensemble of seventeen actors playing the many weird and wonderful characters that feature in one of Dickens most powerful pieces.
